We take the cask apart instead.Twisted Oak is named after the NEOC process, developed for Spiritfilled by Alexandre Sakon, in which a working cask is dismantled, shaved back past its spent layer to live oak, re-toasted over open flame and rebuilt by hand. It is 4 steps, and you can taste every one of them.
What everyone else does — and what we do
The industry answer: refill it. A cask that has given its best years gets filled again. The good oak is still in there; it is just buried under an exhausted layer, and refilling does nothing to reach it. Cheap, easy, and the reason a lot of whisky tastes thin.
The premium answer: finish it. Move the spirit into a different cask (sherry, port, wine) and add a flavour on top. It works. But it is addition: a layer laid over the spirit rather than a change to the wood doing the work.
The NEOC answer: rebuild it. We don't add anything. We remove millimetres of dead wood off the inner face of every stave until we're back to oak still carrying its original seasoning, then re-toast that fresh surface and hoop the cask back together. Subtraction, not addition. It's the one thing a finishing cask physically cannot do.

A blend with purpose
Twisted Oak brings together single malt Scotch whiskies from different distilleries in one eight-year-old blended malt. Every component is malt whisky, with each contributing to the character of the finished bottle.
Single malt is one way to explore Scotch; blended malt opens up another. Bringing different malts together creates room to balance fruit, sweetness, texture and spice. In Twisted Oak, those elements come together as honeyed orchard fruit, soft vanilla and warming oak, with the NEOC casks adding their own influence.
The eight-year age statement refers to the youngest whisky in the blend. It gives you a clear starting point, while the choice of malts and the character of the casks shape what you discover in the glass.

Blend vs Single Malt
Why a blended malt, at single malt money?
At £45, a single malt usually buys you a young, entry-level bottle: standard cask, often chill-filtered and coloured. Twisted Oak spends that same £45 somewhere else entirely - on the cask itself.
It's the oak, not the label. Every whisky at this price is shaped by its cask. Most use a standard barrel. Twisted Oak is finished in a fully NEOC-rebuilt cask - deconstructed, shaved to the untouched heart of the oak, toasted over open flame and rebuilt. That's flavour no ordinary barrel, single malt or not, can reach.
Blended malt is a choice, not a compromise. It's 100% malt whisky, grain, drawn from more than one distillery. Blending lets us build balance, roundness and consistency that a single cask can't always promise. You're tasting the blender's craft, not the luck of one barrel.

Chill-filtering removes the fatty acids that make whisky go cloudy with ice — and takes some of the texture with them. We leave them in. It may haze slightly when cold. That's the point, not a fault.
