The first DAV VERIFIED® whisky casks
Whisky cask ownership has always rested on trust. From 1 October 2026, that trust becomes independently verifiable.
Spiritfilled has partnered with CannyCask to bring the world’s first DAV VERIFIED® whisky casks to market. 14 casks are being prepared for verification at Braeside Bond, a regulated HMRC bonded warehouse, with their provenance independently verified against the warehouse’s own records.
Here is what that means, and why we think it matters.
Cask ownership has always rested on trust
For generations, Scotland’s regulated bonded warehouses have safeguarded the world’s maturing whisky and maintained the records that underpin cask ownership. That system is old, it is regulated, and it works.
What has been missing is a straightforward way for an owner to evidence it.
In practice, provenance records can end up spread across several parties. A cask may change hands more than once during maturation. Its history is often reconstructed from a trail of documents, spreadsheets and email threads, held by whoever happened to be involved at the time.
None of that means the record is wrong. It means confirming it takes time and effort — and that effort lands at exactly the moment a buyer most wants certainty, or a seller most wants a clean sale.
Greater uncertainty. Less transparency. Less trust than the underlying system actually deserves.
What DAV VERIFIED® is
DAV VERIFIED® is an independent verification of a cask’s provenance against the records held by the regulated bonded warehouse that stores it.
It is worth being equally clear about what it is not.
DAV VERIFIED® does not move your cask, change who owns it, or take over the official record. The bonded warehouse remains the authoritative source of truth — as it should. What DAV VERIFIED® adds is independent evidence against that record, in a form that travels with the cask and can be checked by anyone who needs to check it.
The technique behind it is cryptographic signing, the same class of verification used across global financial markets. The process is patent pending.
We would rather you did not have to think about any of that. The point is not the technology. The point is that when someone asks you to evidence a cask’s history, you can.
How the verification works
3 steps, 2 independent signatures.
- CannyCask creates and signs the provenance record. The cask’s provenance is compiled into a single record and cryptographically signed.
- The warehousekeeper verifies and countersigns. The regulated bonded warehouse checks that record against its own books — the records it already maintains and is accountable for — and signs it in turn.
- The record can be checked at any time. Because the 2 signatures come from separate parties, the resulting record can be tested against the warehouse’s record whenever someone needs assurance.
The whole idea is 2 signatures from 2 separate parties. A provenance record signed only by the party selling you the cask is a claim. The same record countersigned by the regulated warehouse that physically holds it is evidence.
Braeside Bond and the first 14 casks
None of this works without a warehouse partner willing to stand behind its own records.
Braeside Bond is CannyCask’s launch bonded warehouse partner and a regulated HMRC bonded warehouse operator. Braeside holds the physical casks, maintains the records, and participates directly in the verification — it is Braeside’s countersignature that makes the record independent rather than self-declared.
14 casks at Braeside Bond are being prepared for DAV VERIFIED® verification ahead of the CannyCask marketplace launch.
That number will grow. But the first 14 are the proof that the process works end to end: physical cask, regulated custody, independent verification, a record an owner can actually use.
What it means if you own a cask
- Independent verification against warehouse records. Your cask’s provenance record has been checked against the warehousekeeper’s, and countersigned by them.
- Provenance that stays with the cask. Not in a folder, an inbox or someone else’s filing system.
- Less friction at the point of sale. Clear verification upfront can reduce the confirmation and reconciliation needed when a cask is sold.
- Transparency for the person buying from you. Which, when you are the one buying, is the same benefit pointing the other way.
If you already own a cask with us, nothing about your ownership changes. DAV VERIFIED® is an additional layer of evidence, not a new form of title.

What happens next
The CannyCask platform goes live on 1 October 2026, and the first DAV VERIFIED® whisky casks will be available to purchase from that date.
Every CannyCask customer completes KYC and AML checks before any cask can be bought — document verification, biometrics, and screening against watchlists, sanctions and politically exposed persons lists. Business buyers complete equivalent KYB checks. No exceptions, and no purchases before approval.
For us, this is a first step rather than a finished product. The bonded warehouse system has protected Scotch for generations and will carry on doing so. What DAV VERIFIED® adds is a way to show, quickly and independently, that the verified cask record matches the bonded warehouse record at the time of verification.
